Bye Bye Baby- JT’s First Haircut

A few weeks back we cut JT’s hair for the first time. It felt like we were saying goodbye to our baby. We hadn’t really cut his hair since he was born: 2 years and 10 months ago. It was a decision we’d been putting off. Well, actually I’d been putting off. He’s been wearing his hair pretty long now for the last year. Occasionally my mother-in-law would trim his bangs but I don’t really consider that a hair cut.

About a month ago I thought I had made up my mind. I took JT into a local shop and told the Lady-with-the-Scissors that this was his first hair cut. “We want to cut it short…er,” I said. “What should we do?” Before she could respond I blurted out, “…I was thinking that maybe we might feather it,” a stumbling reference from my youth, brought on by the stress and trauma of the moment.

Potty Training 101: Points Off For Forget the Sibling

JT has been out of diapers a week and three days.  A week into the Potty Training he made it through his first night diaper free and he’s never looked back. Yay!

We are so proud of him and we have been letting him know it. He seems very happy with himself, too. He beams with delight as he runs around the house saying, “I went pee pee toilet, I went pee pee toilet!” It’s been great, even if a little more work making sure we know were the nearest restroom is at all times. It’s also been focus intensive.

One thing that was brought to our attention recently is that JT has an older brother. His name is Q. (For those reading this blog for the first time we really are aware that we have another son. The above statement is more for effect.)

A few days ago, as we were praising JT by saying, “Yay JT, he slept all night without a diaper,” Q stepped up and said, “And yay for me, I slept in my bed all night!” Mami and I looked to each other.

Warning: Poop Conversations Ahead

Hi this is Papi. We are in the middle of Potty Training my youngest JT. He’s had some wonderful successes and a few accidents. We’ve made it a point to praise the successes and reassure him after the accidents. He seems to be doing well.

JT is pretty headstrong and things can come to a stand still when he gets on his high horse and refuses to sit on the toilet or put on underwear instead of a diaper. It requires Mami and me to dig deep into our bag of tricks, I mean parenting strategies (alright, they’re tricks) to convince JT that it should be our way or the highway. Ok, well not exactly.

And There We Were Standing in Our Underwear...

Today JT is leaving the diaper at home and going to school wearing underwear.  And all it took was a family effort.

After sending Q to his room to change out of his pajamas I spent a good ten minutes with JT trying to sing the praises of Elmo undies.  He wasn’t buying it.  Being the quick thinking Papi that I am I promoted the idea of underwear by dropping my pajamas and saying, “Look son, you’ll have underwear just like Papi.”  JT smiled.

At that moment Q walked into the room.  He was obviously taking a break from getting dressed because he was still in his underwear.  He said, “Look JT, I have calzones (underwear) too.” JT smiled again.

Mami came into the room to get dressed for work.  Why not get everyone into the act?  “JT even Mami has underwear,” I volunteered.  Mami gave me a look…and then dropped her pajamas.  JT started to laugh.

There we were three of us in our underwear and a toddler in a diaper. You get the picture, so there is no need to post any.

Soon JT had his own underwear on and we were off to school. Of course we were taking 3 or 4 changes or underwear and clothes.  Everything takes time and there is a time for everything.

Papi Had a Bad Night

I read an email this morning from a friend.  I had dropped him a note about The Daddy Life here at diggydaddy.com and he wrote back that he loved it and it reminded him of how much he knew I’d be a great father.  I don’t say this to flatter myself but because last night I did not feel like a great dad.

It's Just Understood-Friends With Kids

We had friends over last night.  Friends with kids, that is.  It was a chance for the boys to play and a chance for Mami and me to have some grown up company.  We had some drinks (the grown ups, I mean), fed the children and sent them off to play while the older folks sat down for a simple dinner and nice conversation.

Little Dreamers

Mami is an active dreamer.  Less now than when we were first married.  She used to sit up in bed or have a conversation while she was asleep.  Occasionally, she’d even do some sleep walking.  Apparently she’s passed it on to our boys.  For the passed few nights Q has been having very vivid dreams.

9 is the New Midnight

The New Year is right around the corner.  Looking back it’s amazing to see how much New Year’s celebrations have changed for us.  How we celebrate occasions are a good indication of where we are in our lives.
