Napping My Coworker

JT went to help me replace some sliding closet doors at my parent’s house. Mom chose mirrored doors so my Dad got very nervous every time JT picked up the hammer or screwdriver.
I enjoyed having JT with me. We’d talk about how to do the job and for a while he went off and play in a corner by himself. JT's a character and was a lot of fun. That is, until nap time rolled around...
Nap time coincided with JT beating on the wall with the hammer. He had already been showing signs that he was getting tired and moody. When I took the hammer away, it all hit the fan.
“Papi, give it to me,” he cried, “give it to me, I want it.”
“No son, we have to put it away now.” I said.
After a few more pleas for the hammer I took JT in my arms and turned to my dad. “Dad, I think I’ll have to come back tomorrow.”
He understood. I wondered how many times my Parents had had to leave a place or event because I had reached my limit.
Amid JT’s tears and sobs I put him into my car. He was asleep in five minutes. Right now he’s in his bed sleeping like and angel.
Napping our children has been very important to us. Remembering that, helped me stay calm and not blame JT for the reality of the moment; which was, if napping is important, then the closet doors could wait. After all, even the best helpers need a break sometimes.
